PENUMBRAL SHADOW

Light installation

Wood, music stands, LED lights.

Dimensions variable.

Penumbral Shadow is a sculptural light installation exploring shadow gradients. The work also refers to how we perceive shadows and visual borders. The work activates an optical phenomena called Mach bands.

Mach Bands is an optical illusion named after the physicist Ernst Mach. It reveals how the eye and brain exaggerates the contrast between edges of the slightly differing shades of gray, as soon as they contact one another, by triggering edge-detection in the human visual system. The bands indicate that our visual system accentuates contrast at edges. The visual system feeds us information about the difference between the dark area and the bright area by accentuating the line where they meet.
